At the beginning there was only darkness and fear. And then I decided it was time to take risks and fly. But not alone,I need my students. Together, we'll take off and fly higher and higher in English.
No need to hurry, though. We're on a journey,so let's enjoy the ride!
Carnival is approaching and it's a big event in many countries.
My suggestion to you today is a Carnival crossword. While doing it you'll learn about this festive season in different parts of the world. I hope you enjoy doing it. I certainly did.
Click on 'Watch the adds!'. Scroll down a bit and there you have them. Watch some of them or watch them all. These are excepcionally well done adds about Everyone's Human Rights.
If you would like to know the story of Human Rights, watch the video 'What are Human Rights?' Again, it's very interesting and well done.
Now, let's GET ACTIVE (top bar, on the right). Click and find out 'things anyone can do for human rights'.
Have you already done any of these things? If you have, well done, let's do more; if you haven't, you can start today!
I've just been following suggestions 3 and 13. Now, it's your turn:
Why don't you follow suggestion 11: Create something: a drawing, song, video, poem or just some lines, about one of the human rights or the subject of human rights in general, and share it with others.
By the way, what do you know about this ‘Person of the Year’ nomination? Was it always called like this? Do you have any idea who have been nominated over the years? And who were these people, what did they do? Looking back, do you think that perhaps some nominees might not have been the best choices? What about good choices?
OK, so here’s the deal: why don’t you do some research and share some thoughts on these or other topics regarding the ‘Person of the Year’ subject?
You can try these sites: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Person_of_the_Year http://www.time.com/time/personoftheyear/archive/stories/
Or perhaps you prefer writing about your own 'Person of the Year', that very special person that has inspired you, or helped you, or made you happy, or been the best of friends, or...
If that person deserves a place in your personal history, why can't he/she have a place in history, too?
Today I've thought of talking about free time activities and hobbies. We all have one or two, right?
If you've read my profile, you already know that I like reading and travelling and that I have a hobby - gardening. And it's about this hobby that I would like to tell you something.
I have a small collection ( around 100 plants) of succulent plants. I can see the question forming in your minds: what are succulent plants? Very briefly, succulents are those plants that store water as an adaptation to arid environments. And now I believe you're thinking 'cactus'. Well, not exactly. Although cactus are succulent plants, not all succulent plants are cactus. I only have two cactus in my collection and they are tropical cactus, meaning they don't bite.
So how did I come up with this idea of collecting plants? I really didn't see it coming! It all started when I bought this amazing rose-shaped plant in a matching vase in a supermarket. I headed to my computer to find out what it was - and it was an Echeveria 'Perle von Nurnberg'. By the way, Echeverias are my favourite succulents.
From reading a lot and learning something about them I jumped to international forums and met people with 1000 and even 2000 plant collections. One thing led to another and in no time I was exchanging e-mails with a Swiss lady, who, I found out later, was a retired teacher of German. And from exchanging e-mails we took it to the next level and we began exchanging plants through the mail. And my collection GREW.
Why do I like succulent plants? Because they are a lot like me, independent. They don't need much care or attention, they just want to be left alone. They won't die on you if you forget to water them.
Why do I like gardening? It's an anti-stress activity, it frees my mind and relaxes me.
